    Perceptions of school-based alcohol education by educational and health stakeholders: “Education as usual” compared to a randomised controlled trial

    The present study sought the views of stakeholders, including school leaders and statutory stakeholders, on the content and evaluation of a classroom-based alcohol education intervention in a Randomised Controlled Trial in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Purposive sampling was used to ensure that schools from both the Intervention and Control groups were equally represented, and to ensure that similar numbers and grades of stakeholders in both countries were represented. A total of 27 participants (Male = 13 (48%); Female = 14 (52%)) engaged in a semi-structured interview prior to the end of the trial. Results suggest that: schools generally design their own alcohol education programmes; that intervention schools thought highly of the particular intervention tested; and that both groups engaged meaningfully in the research. The threshold for acceptance of the intervention was lower than the successful outcome of the trial. More pragmatic considerations were considered equally important. From the point of view of the statutory stakeholders, funding of an intervention depends on a successful outcome evaluation, but that “success” may mean a positive impact on at-risk groups, and not necessarily at a universal level. School-based participants also focussed on ease of delivery and user friendliness as key determinants of programme utilisation

    Large-area uniform graphene-like thin films grown by chemical vapor deposition directly on silicon nitride

    Large-area uniform carbon films with graphene-like properties are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition directly on Si3N4/Si at 1000 degrees C without metal catalysts. The as deposited films are atomically thin and wrinkle- and pinhole-free. The film thickness can be controlled by modifying the growth conditions. Raman spectroscopy confirms the sp(2) graphitic structures. The films show ohmic behavior with a sheet resistance of similar to 2.3-10.5 k Omega/square at room temperature. An electric field effect of similar to 2-10% (V-G=-20 V) is observed. The growth is explained by the self-assembly of carbon clusters from hydrocarbon pyrolysis. The scalable and transfer-free technique favors the application of graphene as transparent electrodes

    Ultra-broadband Polarisers Based on Metastable Free-Standing Aligned Carbon Nanotube Membranes

    A carbon nanotube free-standing linearly dichroic polariser is developed using solid-state extrusion. Membrane cohesion is experimentally and numerically demonstrated to derive from inter-tube van der Waals interactions in this family of planar metastable morphologies, controlled by the chemical vapour deposition conditions. Ultra-broadband polarisation (400 nm – 2.5 mm) is shown and corroborated by effective medium and full numerical simulations.This work was supported by the Isaac Newton Trust, Trinity College Cambridge University.     Worse Physical Disability Is Associated With the Expression of PD-1 on Inflammatory T-Cells in Multiple Sclerosis Patients With Older Appearing Brains

    Background: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis method “brain-age” paradigm could offer an intuitive prognostic metric (brain-predicted age difference: brain-PAD) for disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), reflecting structural brain health adjusted for aging. Equally, cellular senescence has been reported in MS using T-cell biomarker CD8+CD57+. Objective: Here we explored links between MRI-derived brain-age and blood-derived cellular senescence. We examined the value of combining brain-PAD with CD8+CD57+(ILT2+PD-1+) T-cells when predicting disability score in MS and considered whether age-related biological mechanisms drive disability. Methods: Brain-age analysis was applied to T1-weighted MRI images. Disability was assessed and peripheral blood was examined for CD8+CD57+ T-cell phenotypes. Linear regression models were used, adjusted for sex, age and normalized brain volume. Results: We included 179 mainly relapsing-remitting MS patients. A high brain-PAD was associated with high physical disability (mean brain-PAD = +6.54 [5.12–7.95]). CD8+CD57+(ILT2+PD-1+) T-cell frequency was neither associated with disability nor with brain-PAD. Physical disability was predicted by the interaction between brain-PAD and CD8+CD57+ILT2+PD-1+ T-cell frequency (AR2 = 0.196), yet without improvement compared to brain-PAD alone (AR2 = 0.206; AICc = 1.8). Conclusion: Higher frequency of CD8+CD57+ILT2+PD-1+ T-cells in the peripheral blood in patients with an older appearing brain was associated with worse disability scores, suggesting a role of these cells in the development of disability in MS patients with poorer brain health

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordWe develop a new theoretical framework of trade agreement (TA) formation, called a ‘parallel contest’, that emphasizes the political fight over TA ratification within countries. TA ratification is inherently uncertain in each country, where anti- and pro-trade interest groups contest each other to influence their own governments’ ratification decision. Unlike prior literature, the protection embodied in negotiated TA tariffs reflects a balance between the liberalizing force of lobbying and inherently protectionist government preferences. Moreover, new international political externalities emerge that are not internalized by governments that just internalize terms of trade externalities
